Nina says: "Because much of my work is abstract and geometric, my quilts are often described as Art Quilts. As an artist and a quilter, my interest lies in creating images and capturing moments that have inspired me or touched me in some moving way. Rather than literal and realistic content, I try to capture my inspiration in the form of a certain shape or texture or wash of color that is reminiscent of the moment I am attempting to document in cloth. My process begins with a basic idea and is very free-form and intuitive. I create as I work, using my fabric as my paint. I enjoy the continual process of exploring design through the manipulation of texture, color, and shapes. Often the art or project takes on a life of its own, which I follow. The names of my quilts are equally abstract, because I don't want to predispose the viewer to label the image. The key is to have the viewer look at the work, to take away from it what they might see--not what I've captured for myself." |
