Rocky Mountain Eyes
© Nannette Moore

Nannette Moore made this multi-award-winning quilt in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Nannette says:

"I used many prints with animals in this quilt. Some became snow, leaves, rocks, and some are in the scene like they belong there. The theme is mother nature is watching us. It is machine pieced, except for the hexagons (leaves), and machine quilted. I used Cynthia England's method with the freezer paper ironed on the front of the fabrics."

The Problem with Princes
© Ellen Eddy

Ellen makes quilts that mingle the natural world with her dreams and personal visions. The intricate embroidery on her quilts describes life in micro- and macrocosm.

Ellen says:

"We all have our toady qualities. These are part of who we are, neither good nor bad entirely. They are socially limiting at times. The problem with the mating dance is that we expect someone of royalty who has no toad-like qualities of their own to completely transform us by ignoring the whole swampy situation. I haven't noticed that this happens normally, but I'm not worried by it. I'm contented to be a lovely lady toad."

Loggerheads
© Sandra Townsend Donabed

Sandy made this quilt as part of her landscape series.

Sandy says:

"'Loggerheads' tells the story of the giant turtles that lumber up on land to lay their eggs in the spring along the barrier beaches on Florida's east coast. Rangers patrol the area during the nesting season to keep people off the beaches until after the babies hatch. There is an ordinance in effect for the houses along the beach to keep their outdoor lights off so the baby turtles don't get confused as they scramble out of the eggs and head for the open seas, where they navigate by the bright stars back to an area off the coast of Africa. When they mature, they return to the same beach where they were born to lay their own eggs. Now, THAT is magic!"

Moongarden
© Sandra Townsend Donabed

Sandy made this quilt as part of her "cutout" series, a technique adapted from the traditional broiderie perse. The quilt is currently in the SAQA "Diversity" show.

Sandy says:

"I made 'Moongarden' to commemorate the Victorian custom of planting a garden with light reflective flowers so it could be enjoyed throughout the evening. I thought this such a romantic idea that I have started my own garden of white flowers so it can be viewed from our terrace with a good bottle of wine! As the sun sets and the pale blossoms start to shimmer, a little magic is generated."

Suddenly an Angel Appears
© Rakhel Biller Klinger

Rakhel makes whimsical quilts to bring smiles and fun into their viewers' lives.

Rakhel says:

"Three rabbits are minding their own business in a fantasy landscape with flowers, palm trees, and grassland. The hot sun is sinking slowly behind distant mountains, when they are taken by surprise with the appearance of an angel, who is also a rabbit and dressed in flying clothes. The angel carries a basket full of fresh carrots to share with his hungry friends."

© Rakhel Biller Klinger

Rakhel made this quilt and others like it to express her delight in the people, animals, birds, and landscapes that have touched her life.

Rakhel says:

"This is a different and swashbuckling 'Benji' of my cat's dreams. He suddenly appears out of a thicket to the surprise of his person, Zoe."
